Galactic Mandate Linux v00: Birthday Edition is the next release after v.99. It preserves the practical Ubuntu Budgie foundation while expanding the custom FUI desktop, themed applications, live telemetry, alerts, Cockpit, Control Center, AI Tools, and visual effects introduced in the previous release.

This release focuses on making the desktop feel more deliberate, responsive, and alive. Themes now behave like separate worlds rather than simple color variations, applications respond more consistently to the active theme, and transitions, sound, and full-screen effects give the system a stronger identity.

What Changed Since v.99

Version .99 established the first eight book-cover-inspired FUI themes. Birthday Edition expands the collection to ten and gives each theme a more distinct composition, motif, contrast system, and behavior across the desktop shell and NF applications.

  • Two new theme worlds: OS13 is a black, white, pale-blue, and amber boardroom-display environment with a working widget system and on-screen keyboard. BB Storm is a separate black-and-navy binary-weather environment.
  • Ojoker replaces the former WHTK direction: Ojoker is a warm lunar CRT-interruption display built around purple interruption bars, scanlines, and a more distinctive visual character.
  • Existing themes are more distinct: Biochamber now uses node-and-connection graphics, while Echo uses an encoded-signal dot pattern. These are complete visual systems rather than simple accent-color changes.
  • Hyperspace theme travel: changing themes now triggers a departure sequence, star-streak travel, a flash, and a hard arrival into the next desktop environment.
  • A new sound layer: theme changes, alerts, and Celebration effects now include science-fiction audio. Hyperspace and alert sounds can be configured separately in NF Control Center.

  • NF Notepad: a new theme-aware desktop notepad with familiar editing commands, printing, word and token counts, vertical tabs, and menu-driven controls.
  • NF Browser: upgraded from a launcher concept into a themed Firefox-based browser surface with compact bookmark controls, fullscreen support, and a Galactic Mandate page-treatment switch.
  • NF Media Player: a theme-aware media player with drag-and-drop support and folder scanning, replacing the earlier static media-browser concept.
  • Celebration: a new desktop-effects application that launches short full-screen birthday, sports, and other celebratory animations over the desktop.
  • Space Explorer: rebuilt around practical folder navigation, keyboard selection, file inspection, and the File Map view.
  • Dedicated web apps: CDcase and Knoll Color are now available as desktop shortcuts.

Galactic Mandate Linux v.3 established the practical foundation: Ubuntu Budgie, the GNOME software stack, everyday applications, Discord, Steam, Flatpak support, and an Ubuntu LTS base.

Version .99 transformed that usable Linux system into the first complete Galactic Mandate FUI desktop. Birthday Edition goes further by making the interface feel more authored, animated, and cohesive while preserving the practical foundation underneath it.

The release is distributed as a 64-bit hybrid live ISO for legacy BIOS and UEFI systems. Boot it in live mode first so you can explore the desktop and test your hardware before installing.

Try It Without Installing

  1. Download the Galactic Mandate Linux v00: Birthday Edition ISO.
  2. Use balenaEtcher or Ventoy to place the ISO on an 8 GB or larger USB drive.
  3. Restart the computer and open its boot menu.
  4. Select the USB drive.
  5. Choose the live option to explore Galactic Mandate Linux without installing it.

Warning: writing an ISO to a USB drive erases the contents of that drive. Back up anything important and verify the selected destination before you begin.

What’s New In v.99

Galactic Mandate Linux v.99 adds a deeper visual conversion than earlier preview builds. The system now boots into a custom FUI desktop with HUD rails, live CPU, memory, and swap readouts, theme-linked book cover wallpaper, custom app launchers, and a first-start tour that explains where everything is.

The new Control Center acts as the command room for the distro. It lets users switch between the hand-authored Galactic Mandate themes, preview the desktop language, control the FUI shell, and rehearse or disable yellow/red alert effects.

Important Note About USB Drive Capacity
After flashing, your USB drive may appear to have a very small capacity (e.g., only 2MB) in your regular file explorer. This is completely normal. The Linux ISO creates partitions that some operating systems cannot read. The boot files and the rest of the system are there and will work correctly when you boot from the USB.

Instructions for Creating a Ventoy Drive

  1. Download Required Files:

  2. Prepare Your USB Drive:

How to Boot the Live Environment

  1. Insert the prepared Galactic Mandate USB drive into your computer.
  2. Restart your computer.
  3. Access the Boot Menu: As the computer starts, press the key to enter the boot menu or BIOS/UEFI settings (common keys are F12, F10, F2, Esc, or Delete). The correct key is often displayed briefly on the screen during startup.
  4. Select USB Drive: In the boot menu, use the arrow keys to select your USB drive (it may be listed as “USB-HDD,” “UEFI: [Your Drive Name],” or similar) and press Enter.
